Speaker of Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova meets with Director General of UN Office in Geneva

Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova has met in Geneva on 3 September with Director General of the UN Office in Geneva Tatyana Valovaya as part of her working visit to the Swiss Confederation.

The history of the relations between Azerbaijan and the UN was broached at the meeting; it was mentioned that the Azerbaijani membership in the UN will turn 35 years next year. Azerbaijan’s contribution to the work of the UN in the past years, the work done and the events held were praised highly during the conversation.

The Speaker of the Milli Majlis shared her thoughts as to the significance of parliamentary diplomacy and its role in the progress of multilateralism. The Speaker informed the Director General of the work of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Assembly, established recently but already commanding a solid foundation. The activities of the world’s largest parliamentary organisation, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), was touched upon in the conversation as well.

The meeting saw an exchange of opinions about parliaments’ tremendous role in strengthening democratic governance and about other matters of interest to both sides.
