Speaker of Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova meets with Vice President of Republic of Uganda

Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova has met with Vice President of the Republic of Uganda Ms Jessica Alupo on 31 August in the course of her working visit to the Republic of Serbia.

The present state of the relations between the two countries was reviewed at the meeting. Satisfaction was expressed with the co-operation and joint activities within the UN and the Non-Aligned Movement as the conversation continued. It was mentioned that Azerbaijan had completed her chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement successfully and ceded it to Uganda. Having addressed the importance of the co-operation within the Non-Aligned Movement, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis shared thoughts about the work done by Azerbaijan during the four-year chairmanship tenure in this organisation, the initiatives put forth by the President of Azerbaijan Mr Ilham Aliyev – including the establishment and operation of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network – and the achievements made during our country’s chairmanship period.

Also, the current state of the bilateral relations in a number of areas was broached and an exchange of opinions was carried out about relations development issues during the meeting. It was remarked that the ASAN Service model represents one of the remarkable examples of our co-operation. This model is employed in Uganda successfully at present; our countries are co-operating in a number of fields. Besides, Ugandan students benefited from the Heydar Aliyev International Education Grant Programme during 2024–2025.

The progress of the co-operation between the Parliaments and in other fields was talked of, too; the importance of exchanging visits was emphasised.

Vice President of the Republic of Uganda Jessica Alupo let it be known that Uganda values highly the existing bilateral relations with Azerbaijan and is interested in their continued development. It was said that there are sound opportunities to further the co-operation in such areas, amongst others, as investments, trade, agriculture, science and technologies.

The Vice President of the Republic of Uganda thanked Azerbaijan for the support provided during the Ugandan chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement. She shared thoughts about the prospects for the two countries’ co-operation in international organisations as well as in the format of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network founded upon the initiative of President Ilham Aliyev.

There was also at the meeting an exchange of opinions regarding other matters of joint interest.
