During her official visit to the Kingdom of Spain, Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova held a meeting with Speaker of the Congress of Deputies Francina Armengol. Welcoming the Speaker of the Milli Majlis, Speaker of the Congress of Deputies Francina Armengol expressed confidence that this visit would significantly contribute to the further strengthening of the existing ties between the parliaments and states of both nations. She conveyed gratitude for Azerbaijan’s exemplary organisation and hosting of the COP29, adding that the conference, which had brought forth significant decisions, had been attended by the Head of Government of the Kingdom of Spain.

During the discussion, the Speaker of the Congress of Deputies pointed up the satisfactory state of the current relations between Azerbaijan and Spain, expressing confidence that the parliaments would continue to support co-operation between the governments. The significant importance of developing the economic ties between the two countries was emphasised, too, with it being said that several Spanish companies show considerable interest in operating in Azerbaijan. This is driven by Azerbaijan’s political and geographical significance.

In turn, Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova expressed gratitude to the Speaker of the Congress of Deputies for the invitation to visit Spain. She shared her thoughts on the current state and development of the relations between Azerbaijan and Spain. Sahiba Gafarova expressed confidence that the successful implementation of the agreements secured during the visit of Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Spain Pedro Sánchez to Azerbaijan in the framework of the COP29 and his negotiations with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev will contribute to the further strengthening of our co-operation.

    During the meeting, the Speakers exchanged views upon the issues of the Azerbaijan-Spain economic relations. As was mentioned by Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova, there are promising prospects for developing co-operation in the field of renewable energy and other areas. She emphasised that both Azerbaijan and Spain are actively engaged in the renewable energy sector. Azerbaijan is currently implementing significant projects in this field and taking steps to export the generated energy to Europe. As it stands, our country is a reliable energy supplier to European nations, including Spain, with the participation of a Spanish company in the TAP project serving as an example of our fruitful co-operation. Speaking about economic ties then, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis particularly stressed Azerbaijan’s transport and transit capabilities, underlining that activities within the framework of the Middle Corridor could become a key area of co-operation between Azerbaijan and Spain.

    The conversation moved on to the situation in the South Caucasus. Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova provided a detailed account of the normalisation process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the history of the erstwhile conflict of the two countries, Azerbaijan's having repaired he territorial integrity and sovereignty, and about also the building and restoration work under way in the de-occupied territories.

Besides, the conversation touched upon other matters of shared interest.

It should be mentioned that Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova had signed the Book of Honourable Guests of the Congress of Deputies before the meeting began.
