Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova has met with Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Morocco Aziz Akhannouch. As he referred to the sound bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Morocco, the Prime Minister commended particularly the mutual support across the topicality of mutual importance. Negotiations are under way about furthering the evolution of the Moroccan-Azerbaijani relations with morocco intent on continuing the talks, according to Mr Akhannouch. He touched upon the significance of the current visit of the Speaker of the Milli Majlis for the progress of the two-way relations and said that this visit spelled the level of the Azerbaijani-Moroccan connexions.

Chair of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova underlined the roles of our parliaments as one of the crucial growth vectors for the bilateral relations. She also informed Mr Akhannouch of the meetings she had held during her first official visit to the Kingdom of Morocco. Mrs Gafarova specified that several matters of intense importance in the context of the interaction between our states and their parliaments had been discussed at those meetings.

That the diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Morocco had turned thirty years in 2022  was mentioned, too, as the conversation went on. The inter-state relations had progressed, and the mutually advantageous co-operation advanced in that period. The Chair of the Milli Majlis underscored the gravitas of high-level reciprocal visits in the development of the bilateral relations.

It was mentioned also that Azerbaijan and Morocco co-operated successfully and demonstrated solidarity in international organisations. Our countries support each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. Besides, it was said, Morocco is actively involved in the work of the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement that had been incepted upon the instance of President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan.

There was then an exchange of views upon the importance of furthering the economic ties between our countries. As Speaker Sahiba Gafarova said, it is possible to tap into the existing potential of our relations and make them more diverse and advanced in various areas. The Inter-Governmental Joint Commission is an important platform in this sense, Mrs Gafarova emphasised before stressing the significance of carrying out the decisions of the 2nd Commission meeting in November this year for the continued activities. The Parliaments, too, play a substantial role in building up a treaty and legal framework for a continued progress of the bilateral relations, Mrs Gafarova added.

Further, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis informed the Prime Minister of Azerbaijan’s having de-occupied her lands in 2020 and the post-war situation in the region and the peace initiatives of Azerbaijan. Besides, she shared her thoughts about the peace prospects arisen in the region.

The options of co-operation between our country and Morocco in the format of the restoration work under way in the de-occupied territories of Azerbaijan were talked over then. As Speaker Sahiba Gafarova said, reviving those lands is the main goal of the policy currently pursued under the guidance of President Ilham Aliyev. Those territories are being reclaimed based on the ‘smart town’ and ‘smart village’ concepts, and they have been declared a green zone. The Chair of the Milli Majlis pointed out that the mines Armenia had planted posed a serious obstacle to the current restoration and re-construction work.

The Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Morocco offered his congratulations on Azerbaijan’s having restored her territorial integrity and sovereignty and described the restoration of the de-occupied Azerbaijani lands as an important step.

Furtherance of the co-operation between Azerbaijan and Morocco in transport, tourism, agriculture and other sectors was discussed as well; besides, they brought up the necessity of intensifying the economic contacts.
