Speaker of Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova Meets with Prime Minister of Lithuania

Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova had a meeting on 9 April with Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania Inga Ruginienė who is in our country on an official visit.

The conversation saw an exchange of opinions about the current state and growth prospects of the relations between Azerbaijan and Lithuania. The Speaker of Parliament described the official visit of the Prime Minister to our country as a sign of the intention to continue expanding the already-present co-operation between the two states.

The remarkable role of high-level and summit reciprocal visits as well as of the political dialogue in the broadening of the co-operation was underlined during the conversation.

Saying that the documents signed between the countries constituted a solid legal foundation for the co-operation, Speaker Sahiba Gafarova high-lit the need to continue expanding the treaty and legal framework. It was observed during the meeting that it was important to develop the economic and trading links proportionally to the existing potential; the presence of additional opportunities to that end was emphasised, too.

As she touched upon the humanitarian co-operation, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis remarked that education and culture links factor dramatically in deepening the relations between the peoples.

The significance of the inter-parliamentary co-operation of the two countries was broached at the meeting. It was stressed that reciprocal visits and the endeavours of the Working Groups for inter-parliamentary relations contributed to the progress of the dialogue of the legislative bodies. Also, the need to deepen co-operation between the Parliaments’ specialist Committees was underscored.

Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania Inga Ruginienė thanked for the warm welcome. She said that her country deemed advancing the progress of the relations with Azerbaijan a high priority; she also pointed u the existing broad opportunities and the importance of economic, humanitarian, defence and security co-operation.

The guest mentioned her membership in the Friendship Group for Azerbaijan in the Lithuanian Parliament before talking about the role of the Parliaments in the development of the bilateral relations and underlining the need to expand the work done by the Working Group as well as to promote reciprocal visits.

After the meeting, the guests acquainted themselves with the Plenary Chamber of the Milli Majlis and the Victory Corner organised in the parliamentary foyer.
