Speaker of Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova Meets with President of Georgia

The delegation led by President of Georgia Mikheil Kavelashvili and in our country on an official visit, called at the Milli Majlis on 16 April.
First, the President of Georgia went to the Plenary Chamber of the Milli Majlis. Then, the guest was introduced to the exhibits of the Heydar Aliyev Memorial Hall and left a heartfelt entry in the Memory Book there. After that, the sides had a meeting in the extended formats.
Speaker of the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan Sahiba Gafarova welcomed the President of Georgia and the delegation led by him to the Milli Majlis cordially, and recalled fondly her meeting with the President of Georgia during the official visit to Georgia a while ago.
The Speaker of Parliament described Mikheil Kavelashvili’s first foreign visit as President of Georgia as another manifestation of the friendship and fraternity of our peoples. She said that that was also a token of the strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and Georgia. The Speaker remarked confidently that this visit was bound to contribute to the strengthening and expansion of the relations between our countries.
As she was talking about the links to Georgia, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis emphasised our peoples having always lived in amity, fraternity and good neighbourhood – just as they do today. She said that factor was the foundation of our relationship.
The Speaker broached the fact that, as President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev had said, the political ties between our countries could set an example for all the neighbours. She added that, apart from bilateral co-operation, there was also a successful trilateral co-operation format covering a number of areas between Azerbaijan, Georgia and Türkiye.
Touching then upon the high level of the parliamentary relations between the two countries, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis highlit the roles of the friendship groups, also pointing at the significance of co-operation between parliamentary committees. She said that our MPs co-operated energetically in international parliamentary organisations. Our parliaments’ collaboration in the international arena is especially essential given certain international organisations’ biased attitude to our countries, the Speaker stressed.
The Speaker then underlined Azerbaijan’s unwavering commitment to her own peace agenda, saying she was confident that signing of the peace treaty with Armenia would generate big prospects for the region.
President of Georgia Mikheil Kavelashvili thanked for the warm welcome before bringing up the importance of his first official visit as President to Azerbaijan.
He shared the impressions from today’s meeting with President Ilham Aliyev, remarking that there had been a conversation of utmost importance and usefulness for the continued intensification of the relations. Also, President Kavelashvili said that the relations between Georgia and Azerbaijan, and their strategic partnership set examples for other countries. Our countries have been facing a number of challenges over the past years; external forces’ attempted interference in our countries’ internal affairs showed us that we had to defend our national and family values, our history and traditions. It is important to support each other; this is of great essence.
The President of Georgia went further to broach the high level of the bilateral parliamentary relations; he underlined the role of reciprocal visits in this context.
The immense importance of strengthening the ties between the two countries’ youth for our future was underscored as the meeting went on.
President Mikheil Kavelashvili lauded the accommodation of the text of the peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia, adding confidently that the peace treaty would be signed in the nearest future. As he put it, the peace treaty’s signing will ensure peace and stability in the region.
Next, the President of Georgia stressed the tremendous potential of the South Caucasus and spoke of the importance of tapping into that potential extensively.
The meeting also had an exchange of opinions about other matters.
