Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova had a meeting on 14 April with the visiting delegation led by Acting Speaker of the Senate of the Parliament of Romania Mircea Abrudean.

Sahiba Gafarova, who greeted the guest and his delegation cordially, voiced a confidence that the current visit would contribute to the development of the relations between our parliaments and countries. She mentioned Romania’s having been the second country in the world and the first one amongst the Members of the European Union to recognise the independence of Azerbaijan.

The conversation also touched upon the strategic partnership to which the relations between Azerbaijan and Romania had graduated, and about the role of high-status visits and meetings in the progress of the bilateral relations.

They mentioned the fact that the inter-state links had generated fine opportunities to continue the progress of the co-operation between the legislative bodies, the remarkable roles of the parliamentary friendship groups and the importance of building direct links between parliamentary committees.

Besides, Sahiba Gafarova underscored the fruitful co-operation between Azerbaijan and Romania in international organisations.

The Speaker of the Milli Majlis went on to inform the guests of the current regional situation established following the Patriotic War, Azerbaijan’s struggle against certain European countries’ pressure and premeditated disinformation, which our country had to face upon enforcing independently the resolutions of the UN Security Council and restoring her own territorial integrity and independence, and about also the progress of the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia. She said that the text of the bilateral peace treaty had been agreed upon already. However, the signing of the treaty is obstructed by two circumstances. Those are the territorial claims to Azerbaijan that are contained in the preamble to the Armenian Constitution and dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group which had worked on solving the problem for long years but the efforts of which are no longer required. With those two matters resolved, there will be no impediments left and the peace treaty between the two countries can be signed then.

Furthermore, Azerbaijan’s construction and restoration work she is doing in the territories she liberated, the Smart Town and Smart Village projects, the residents’ returning to their native parts and the necessary restoration of the rights of the Western Azerbaijanis were talked over as the meeting went forward.

Acting Speaker of the Senate of the Parliament of Romania Mircea Abrudean thanked for the warm welcome and talked about the great development potential behind co-operation between Azerbaijan and Armenia in many fields.

As the guest said, his country has always recognised the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, protected our country in international organisations including OSCE, and is behind the peace plan concerning Armenia. He said he trusted the peace treaty would be signed soon, adding that he was certain of that event coming to ensure a brilliant future for the region.

Turning to the successful co-operation with Azerbaijan in energy, transport and other areas, the guest mentioned the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding about applying the ASAN Service experience in Romania and the study of the correspondent experience.

The meeting also saw a discussion about other matters of shared interest to the parties.
