The statement that Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States Congress Nancy Pelosi made during her visit to Armenia is profoundly deplorable.

The provocation on the yet-undelimitated conventional Azerbaijani-Armenian border of the night of 12 September and the early hours of 13 September 2022 was made by Armenia precisely. The Azerbaijani Army took a response action in order to defend the territorial integrity and sovereignty of their country. The ceasefire has been restored and a further escalation of the situation has been averted by the present time.

Whilst Azerbaijan is doing a large-scale work to restore and rebuild her de-occupied lands and is also making efforts to ensure peace and stability in the region, Armenia is harming the peace process through its consistently destructive stance and armed provocations. The responsibility for such steps rests wholly with the military-political Administration of Armenia.

The articulation by the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives is reflection of an approach to what has happened that is rather departed from objectivity, biased and one-sided. Nancy Pelosi who has been known as a pro-Armenian politician throughout her career has doubtless voiced that statement while under the impact of the Armenian propaganda. To this also clearly testifies the fact that the delegation that went to Armenia contained three pro-Armenian members of the US Congress. On the other hand, it is evident that that visit itself, arranged ahead of the midterm elections to the US Congress, served the personal interests of Mrs Pelosi as one of the steps taken by her to  enlist the support of the Armenian Lobby.

The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives should be aware that her statement, whilst fanning the revanchist sentiment in Armenia, is seriously harming the Azerbaijan-Armenia normalisation as well as the pains taken to provide lasting peace and stability in the region.

Another regrettable instance is that in all those almost thirty years for which the Azerbaijani lands remained occupied by Armenia we never once witnessed statements by the politicians like Nancy Pelosi backing the standards and principles of the international law as well as the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan. Instead, they preferred to keep silent about the ethnic cleansing policy on the part of Armenia as well as that close to 1 million of our compatriots became refugees and displaced persons, the acts of vandalism committed during the period of occupation and the destruction of our towns and villages. They avoided taking any stance in that regard. This being the case, the statement that the Speaker of the United States Congress’ House of Representatives made under the influence of the Armenian propaganda should only be regarded as another vivid manifestation of double standards.
